As coastal communities spend millions to restore sand to local beaches, concern over rising water levels is making some question the value of these efforts.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is developing a $30 million sand restoration project along the shores of Encinitas and Solana Beach.
Engineers admit that the project does not account for rising sea levels being attributed to global warming that could potentially steal the freshly restored sand right off of our local beaches.
In the last century oceanography experts say that the water level along San Diego, San Francisco and Seattle has seen a 7-inch increase in average sea levels measured by tidal gauges.
Scientists agree that human-field greenhouse gas emissions will warm the world in the next fifty years. What scientist don’t agree upon, is the effect that warming will have on the ocean.
If ocean levels continue to rise scientists fear that sand will be simply washed away along with the tax dollars that put that sand on our beaches.
