Bus drivers to mark a moment of silence

NORTH COUNTY: Bus drivers and other North County Transit District employees will honor those who died defending the nation by observing a moment of silence on Memorial Day.

District Executive Director Karen King said the transit employees will stop at 3 p.m. Monday to honor the nation’s fallen.

“This Memorial Day, NCTD staff and coach operators will slow down for a brief minute to pay respect to our nation’s military men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice in service,” King said in a statement.

The district will observe its Sunday/holiday service schedule on Monday. The Coaster commuter train between San Diego and Oceanside will not operate. –M.B.

Embassy flag sent to school

ENCINITAS: Students at Encin-itas Country Day School were presented with a special U.S. flag Thursday to help them celebrate Memorial Day.

The flag came from Marine Lt. Col. Mario Carazo, who raised the flag over the U.S. Embassy in Iraq on March 30. Carazo, who is deployed in Iraq, is the father of students Mario and Milla Carazo.

Mario, a kindergartener, raised the flag at the school with the help of Carazo’s friend, Marine Major Tony Gallardo. Milla, a preschooler, and their mother, Jennifer Carazo, watched.

“He sent the flag to connect to the school, and to his children,” said Kathleen Porterfield, principal of Encinitas Country Day. –B.L.
