ENCINITAS —- Two men were injured in a “massive side swipe” and roll-over crash at 2:15 a.m. Saturday on Birmingham Drive at Carol View Road, sheriff’s Sgt. T.C. Yancey said.
A woman in a Chevrolet Silverado was waiting for a green light at a left-turn lane in the westbound lanes of Birmingham Drive when a Ford Explorer hit her vehicle from behind, Yancey said.
The Ford Explorer was apparently traveling at a high rate of speed and struck the right rear fender of the Silverado, then scraped down the right side of the pickup, he said.
The Explorer then rolled three times, ejecting the driver, Yancey said. The driver was taken by Mercy Air to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla and his passenger was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas, the sergeant said. The extent of their injuries was not known later Saturday.
The Silverado’s driver was not hurt, Yancey said.
