ENCINITAS, Calif. (UPI) — An Encinitas, Calif., landscaper defied the
city’s order to reduce the size of a large sign near a freeway that uses a
vulgarity to describe a city official.
The 72-square-foot sign on landscaper Russell Bowman’s property, which
faces Interstate 5, refers to Council member Maggie Houlihan with a word so
shocking to some residents that they called the sheriff’s office, the San
Diego Union-Tribune said.
Bowman added the sign to nine others on his five acres of land. Three read:
“Vote No Houlihan,” even though the council member is in the middle of a
four-year term. The rest of the signs are religious or business-related,
the Union-Tribune said. Another sign on Union Street repeated the
vulgarity.
The city ordered Bowman to reduce the size of his sign, but he hasn’t done
so yet, the Union-Tribune said. Now the city is considering legal action.
