ENCINITAS — A young Texas teacher died Sunday as he began surfing off an Encinitas beach, authorities said Monday.
They said the cause of death for 25-year-old Theodore A. Waterman III of Galveston has yet to be determined.
Waterman and a friend were at the Grandview Beach shortly after 5 p.m., sheriff’s Sgt. William Dreyer said.
“They had just come out on their annual surfing adventure,” and also to visit family and friends, said Dreyer.
He said the men rented surfboards, and they were paddling out after 5 p.m. when the friend realized Waterman was off his board and face down in the water.
The friend and others in the area helped get Waterman to shore, where attempts were made to revive him.
Paramedics pronounced Waterman, who is single, dead at 5:50 p.m. at the beach, a San Diego County medical examiner’s investigator said.
