Hey everyone it’s poetry slam time again up in Encinitas. If you are a poet, with three 3-minute pieces of performance poetry, or maybe you just like watching your friends make a fool of themselves perform, the Full Moon Poetry Slam is the place to be on Thursday, February 1.
Poets need to be ready with 3 pieces (in case you make it to the final round) and be at the theater by 6 pm. Names will be drawn from the traditional popcorn bucket to determine which 17 poets can compete. Late poets cannot put their names into the bucket. Time limit is 3 mintues. Longwinded poets will be penalized. No props, no musical instruments… just your own words and your own self. Full Moon Poets Slam Rules are online. For a history of poetry slam, born in Chicago at the Get Me High Lounge and still ongoing at the Green Mill Tavern, check out Marc Smith’s (so WHAT!) website.
The Full Moon Poetry Slam takes place at the historic La Paloma Theater in downtown Encinitas and has one of the best payouts around the country. The infamous popcorn bucket is passed around– and this standing room only crowd ponies up for the poets’ prize money. (Last time I went the winning poet received over $400 dollars! not bad for 9 minutes a lifetime of work.)
