OCEANSIDE: Police are notifying residents today that two sex offenders have moved near Oceanside Boulevard and Greenbrier Drive.

Mark Pliska, 53, was convicted of molesting two boys when he was living in Mendocino County in 1983.

Pliska is at the center of a debate at Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Carlsbad in which congregation members are trying to decide whether he should be allowed to attend the church.

Also moving into the neighborhood is Karl Fairman, 47, who was listed as a violent sexual predator. He was convicted of assault with intent to commit rape and other forcible acts using violence.

As sex offenders, the men are required to check in regularly with authorities and are listed on a state Megan’s Law Web site.

Shoe store held up by armed robber

VISTA: A gunman robbed a shoe store yesterday afternoon, sheriff’s officials said.

The robber entered the Payless Shoe Source on Santa Fe Avenue just east of Escondido Avenue at 3 p.m. and stole an unknown amount of cash.

No other details were available.

Man shot in leg for gold necklace

OCEANSIDE: A man was shot in the leg early yesterday after he refused to give up his gold necklace to a robber, police said.

The robber, who pulled up in a dark-colored sport utility vehicle, tried to tear the necklace from the victim’s neck on Edgehill Lane, near Oceanside Boulevard and Foussat Road, at 1 a.m., police said.

The victim struggled with the robber, who then pulled out a handgun and fired a shot.

The victim was taken to a hospital and is expected to recover.

Suspect in two-city crime spree sought

NORTH COUNTY: Authorities are searching for a robber who went on a mini crime spree in Escondido and San Marcos on Monday night.

First, he stopped a man on Tanglewood Lane in Escondido just after 11 p.m. and simulated a weapon under his shirt, police said. He stole the man’s lunch pail and fled in a green car.

He then followed a man and woman on the freeway to a mobile-home park on Barham Drive near Meyers Avenue in San Marcos and insisted that they owed him money, sheriff’s officials said.

Wearing white socks over his hands, he shoved the woman, stole her purse and then punched the man in the face before fleeing.

He was described as black, in his 30s, about 5 feet 6 inches tall, 200 pounds and driving an older green Honda.

Two men in truck take store’s ATM

ENCINITAS: Robbers in a pickup truck crashed through a plate-glass window and yanked an automated teller machine from the floor of a convenience store early Monday, sheriff’s officials said.

The ATM contained more than $2,000 when it was stolen from O’Brien’s Station on Encinitas Boulevard just east of Interstate 5.

There was no description of the suspects.

Motorcyclist dies after hitting truck

VISTA: A 37-year-old motor-cyclist was killed yesterday when he crashed into the back of a concrete truck, authorities said.

Mark Blecher of Vista was pronounced dead at the scene, the county Medical Examiner’s Office said.

The concrete pumper truck was slowly climbing a hill on Sycamore Avenue near Hot Springs Way at 6 a.m., emitting a large amount of smoke because of engine problems, sheriff’s officials said.

Belcher came up behind the truck rapidly and crashed into the back because of reduced visibility. He was then struck by a van also traveling east on Sycamore.

The driver of the concrete truck was unaware of the crash until he returned to his base, officials said.
