VISTA – The City Council approved a contract this week for road improvements near Rancho Minerva Middle School, where some school board members have expressed concern the safety of students because of a lack of sidewalks. Rancho Minerva opened for students in January.

The contract, approved Tuesday night, is for more than $380,000 in road improvements and sidewalk construction. Officials hope to begin the work later this month and have it complete by mid-May.

The work includes adding an 800-foot decomposed granite walkway on Foothill Drive between the school and the intersection with Vale Terrace Drive. The work also includes repairing and repaving Foothill along the same stretch of road.

Bid filed for vacancy on Carlsbad council

CARLSBAD: The first application to fill the City Council vacancy created by last week’s resignation of Norine Sigafoose was submitted to the city clerk yesterday by Steve Aceti.

Aceti is executive director of the California Coastal Coalition, a nonprofit collection of cities, counties and other groups that advocate for such causes as beach sand replenishment, wetlands recovery and preventing beach debris.

Aceti, a native of New York and a graduate of Albany Law School, was involved in politics and civic causes there before moving to San Diego County in 1995. He has been active in coastal issues ever since.

Aceti’s office is in Encinitas, where he has served on the Beach Restoration Committee, Encinitas Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Encinitas MainStreet Association, as well as other groups.

The Carlsbad council voted Tuesday to fill Sigafoose’s seat by appointment rather than special election. Residents have until 5 p.m. Monday to submit applications.

The council plans to interview applicants at 6 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall, and appoint a successor March 13.
