The sheriff’s department is trying to locate the owners of stolen items taken from homes that were for sale or under construction.

A burglary ring that canvassed North County resulted in more than $25,000 in stolen goods being recovered, all thanks to an anonymous tip. Two of the suspected thieves are in custody, but a third is still on the loose.

“The purpose is to reunite the rightful owner with the goods,” sheriff’s department spokesperson Jan Caldwell said.

Those accused in the ring reportedly targeted new home construction sites or homes that were up for sale or rent.

“They would surveil the area, they would see the workers or real estate agents leave and then they would rent a truck and they would back the truck in — they look like workers — they’d just start hauling out stuff,” Caldwell said.

Police believe burglars lifted items from homes between July 2006 until just last month, all to score drugs.

If your home was burglarized and you live in Rancho Santa Fe, Carlsbad, Encinitas or Solana Beach or other cities along the coast, look closely — some of the items may be yours.

“If we don’t have people calling and giving us information that we can validate that this is in fact their property, it’s going to go to public auction,” Caldwell explained.

“This ring knew what they were doing. They thought this through, but they didn’t think it through well enough that they wouldn’t be arrested.”
