Chamber award: Morris Pike of Encinitas was presented with the Paul
Ecke II Community Award by the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce.

Hitting a high note: Warren Torns, a music teacher at Mt. Carmel High School, has been recognized as an outstanding music educator by Heritage Festivals. He is also a recipient of the John Philip Sousa Foundation Legion of Honor and is an honorary life member of the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association.

Chamber award: Morris Pike of Encinitas was presented with the Paul Ecke II Community Award by the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce. He is a member of the Greater Encinitas Kiwanis. Pike and a crew of volunteers deliver books to preschools and primary schools as part of the Kiwanis Literacy Program.

Significant contributions: Carol Wilkinson, MiraCosta College service learning coordinator, received the Richard E. Cone Award for significant contributions to the development of partnerships between institutions of higher education and communities surrounding the campus.

Science grant: Jeanine Donley, an instructor at MiraCosta College, has been awarded an $18,000 grant from the National Science Foundation. The three-year grant will be used to fund paid internships for MiraCosta students interested in careers in biology or research.

Silver and gold: Six community members were honored at the Soroptimist International of Rancho Bernardo Gold and Silver Ball. Those recognized for outstanding contributions to the community were: Nick Anastasopoulos, community support; Bill and Sue Evarts, international goodwill and understanding; Vincene Parrinello, Making a Difference; Pat Roberts, education; and Rebecca Nagorski, human rights and status of women.

IN THE MILITARY

Keesha M. Esera: Army Pvt. Esera, daughter of Ekatasi Jones of Oceanside, has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. She is a 2006 graduate of Oceanside High School.

Jeffrey D. Cabrera: Army Spec. Cabrera, a 2001 graduate of El Camino High School in Oceanside, has returned to the 1st Battalion, 35th Armor Regiment, 1st Armored Division, Baumholder, Germany, after being deployed to an overseas location in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. His wife, Josadeth, is the daughter of Lilia Picken of Oceanside.

Alexis N. Williams: Air Force Airman Williams, daughter of Kim Scaife of Oceanside, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. She is a 2002 graduate of El Camino High School in Oceanside.

Ryan Tamburrino: Army Pvt. Tamburrino, son of Steve Tamburrino of Carlsbad, graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He is a 1990 graduate of Vista High School.

David C. Schultz: Air Force Airman Schultz, son of Jeff Schultz of Oceanside, has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is a 2005 graduate of Rancho Buena Vista High School.

Barbara J. Barney: Army Pvt. Barney, daughter of Mary Brown of Fallbrook and granddaughter of Raul Martinez of Oceanside, graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. She graduated from Fallbrook High School in 2000.
