ENCINITAS, CA (CNS) — Deputies in Encinitas rescued a man who was locked in the trunk of his vehicle for 23 hours after he was allegedly kidnapped in Orange County, authorities said.

The man said he had been abducted while getting into his vehicle in a parking lot in Cypress about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, when someone pushed a gun into his side, according the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.

After the victim was told to turn off his cell phone and to blindfold himself with a bandana, his hands were bound and he was placed in the trunk by someone who then drove the vehicle for a few hours, sheriff’s Sgt. Amy Brown said.

The Sheriff’s Department received a call from the victim about 4:30 p.m. yesterday, with the cell phone signal coming from a tower on Leucadia Boulevard, Brown told The San Diego Union-Tribune.

He told investigators he waited several hours before attempting to make the call because he was afraid the kidnapper might shoot him, authorities said.

Deputies found the victim by blasting their sirens until he could hear them and indicate they were near the vehicle, which he had described to them, sheriff’s officials said.

The vehicle was located on in the 800 block of Orpheus Avenue. The victim emerged from the trunk when deputies deployed a trunk-release in the vehicle’s glove box, Brown said. His condition was not immediately released.

A Cypress Police Department watch commander said his department will not pursue the case.

The decision not to investigate any further was taken after the supposed victim proved to be uncooperative during questioning, said Cypress police Sgt. Tim Rand.

”There may be more to the story that is not being told,” Rand said.
