ENCINITAS – Something that looked a human hand was discovered on the beach yesterday by a man out for a Sunday stroll.
The man called authorities and the object was taken to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office. Homicide detectives have been contacted, but officials said they first must determine whether the flesh is human and not a seal or dolphin flipper, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.
Local resident Rick Rogers spotted the appendage about 1:45 p.m. at the water’s edge near Moonlight Beach. Rogers said he then stopped a passing jogger to ask him whether he saw the same thing.
“I was just out catching some sun and looking at the flotsam and jetsam, I saw a Budweiser can, a doll’s arm and then I saw this white thing,” said Rogers, who is a military reporter for The San Diego Union-Tribune.
Rogers said what he saw looked like a white human hand, palm up, with some fingers missing.

Duplex damaged by fire in attic
VISTA – An attic fire caused more than $325,000 damage to a duplex yesterday.
A woman at a business on East Vista Way spotted the fire nearby on Hillside Terrace at 8:30 a.m. and alerted authorities, according to the Vista Fire Department.
No one was home on either side of the duplex, officials said. Although the fire is still under investigation, officials said a preliminary review traced the fire to a heating vent that came in contact with combustible attic storage.

Boat belonging to 2 fishermen found
More than two weeks after a pair of Mexican fishermen were rescued by the Coast Guard, San Diego lifeguards recovered their capsized boat yesterday.
The Pelillo, a 22-foot boat made of fiberglass and wood, was found about two miles from the La Jolla shore, said lifeguard Sgt. Troy Keach.
The two fishermen had clung to the overturned boat off the coast of Rosarito Beach for five days before their rescue. “It just drifted out in the ocean until it came within city waters,” Keach said.
