Writing contest opens

The San Dieguito Heritage Museum recently announced the Wendy Haskett Memorial Writing Contest for third-grade students in Cardiff, Carmel Valley, Del Mar, Encinitas, Leucadia, Olivenhain, Rancho Santa Fe and Solana Beach.

The contest is being held to foster the love of history and writing in the local community. The competition honors the memory of Wendy Haskett, a well-loved and well-published author of local history. After hearing longtime residents reminisce, Wendy wrote lively stories to bring the past to life for local newspapers and in her three books.

Third-graders are asked to interview an older local person and write a story about life in the past or research and write about a historic building or important event in our community. Entries must be hand-written on sheets of paper no larger than 8 1/2-by-11 inches. A drawing, painting or other piece of art should be included that illustrates the written work. Judges will look for content, organization, writing style and creativity.

Students should write their name and phone number on the back of their stories and art pieces and mail them to the San Dieguito Heritage Museum, 561 S. Vulcan Ave., Encinitas, CA 92024, or bring them to the museum.

The contest deadline is Feb. 15. Winners will be notified by March 1. Awards are $100 first place, $50 second place and $25 third place. All entries will be on display at the museum the month of March. Pick up entries from the museum after March 31.

For more information, call (760) 632-9711 or log on to http://www.sdheritage.org.
