Six years ago, Yphantides transformed his life, taking an inward journey and gaining powerful insight into the issues of food addiction. He will share how he lost 270 pounds and how he has kept it off for more than five years.

Winery to hold arts and craft fair

‘Kafka’s Last Love’ author to speak

RANCHO PENASQUITOS — The Rancho Penasquitos Library’s Book Club will host a free presentation by author Kathi Diamant at 6:30 p.m. May 16. Diamant will discuss her book, “Kafka’s Last Love: The Mystery of Dora Diamant” and answer questions.

“Kafka’s Last Love” is the first biography of Dora Diamant, Franz Kafka’s lover and companion during the last year of his life. Kafka, who died in 1924, is considered one of the most influential, profoundly misunderstood writers of the 20th century. He has been credited with the creation of the modern novel.

The book is based on almost 20 years of research by the author, who heads up the Kafka Project at San Diego State University. The Kafka Project is the international search for Kafka’s missing papers. For information about the project, go to http://www.kafkaproject.com.

POWAY — A group of Poway residents recently launched a nonprofit cartoon caption contest. The device magnifies anything under the viewfinder from two to more than 50 times its original size, while maintaining perfect sharp focus and contrast and lighting for optimal visual enhancement and eliminating glare and shadowing.

Canine Companions to hold graduation

OCEANSIDE — Canine Companions for Independence will hold its Spring 2007 Graduation Ceremony at noon May 12 at Mission San Luis Rey, 4070 Mission Ave. The event is free. People with disabilities will graduate with their new, highly skilled assistance dogs. These dogs have been in training for more than two years and know approximately 50 commands, including opening doors, turning on and off lights and retrieving dropped objects. The ceremony is the culmination of an intensive, two-week Team Training course with these new human/canine partners.

The ceremony also will include volunteer puppy raisers turning in their CCI puppies that they have been raising for 14 to 16 months. The puppies will return to CCI to embark on six to nine months of advanced training in the hopes that they will one day become a companion to someone in need. Health program being launched

FALLBROOK — Fallbrook Hospital is launching a community collaborative program featuring a monthly series of free seminars, health fairs, educational programs and interactive events that will focus on women.

Healthy Woman programs are dedicated to improving the emotional, physical and fiscal well-being of both women and the families they take care of.

Women, who make between 80 and 90 percent of all healthcare decisions, often balance careers, primary and secondary families, issues with parents and civic work. Healthy Woman was created by women for women to provide up-to-date healthcare information for their entire family. The program’s mission is to empower women with the knowledge and confidence to make informed healthcare and well-being decisions for themselves and their loved ones.

The monthly Healthy Woman presentations will cover physical and emotional healthcare, as well as financial well-being and spiritual development. Healthcare topics will include pertinent information on heart disease, diabetes, breast cancer, menopause, nutrition, osteoporosis, stress management and life balance issues. While the majority of the topics are health-focused, a variety of other topics of importance to women will be presented including topics to incorporate the support and services offered by the collaborative business partners.

Morro Hills community plans sale

Camera club plans annual banquet

Community grant program announced

ENCINITAS — The city of Encinitas Community Grant Program is seeking applicants for Fiscal Year 2007-08. The program assists not-for-profit, arts and community based organizations accomplish projects and programs that directly benefit the residents of Encinitas. The maximum single grant amount is $5,000, and a total of $50,000 is available. The Encinitas City Council recognizes the value of an ongoing program whereby nonprofit organizations have a means of requesting funding from the city to accomplish civic and arts projects or programs.

Requests for funding will be considered through a CGP application process. Applicant organizations must be legally organized, hold not-for-profit tax exempt status and be based in Encinitas or provide services that directly benefit Encinitas residents. Application forms are available online and can be downloaded at the city of Encinitas Web site at http://www.ci.encinitas.ca.us, or by contacting the City Manager’s Office at (760) 633-2610. Applicants are encouraged to complete the form online, print and return it via U.S. mail or in person to 505 S. Vulcan Avenue, Encinitas, CA. The deadline to apply is 4 p.m. May 31. Arts applications will be reviewed by the Commission for the Arts and recommendations forwarded to the City Council. Pirates, sailors battle in the bay

Mother’s Day Home Tour on tap

ESCONDIDO — Five notable historical homes will be featured in the 10th annual Old Escondido Mother’s Day Home Tour, which will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 13. The Old Escondido Historic District homes represent five different architectural styles, built between the late 1800s and 1931.

ESCONDIDO — The city’s Community Services Department will offer a class called “Give Fido a Chance” for people who want a better behaved dog. Along the lines of TV’s Cesar Millan, this class will be taught by the animal behaviorist for the Escondido Humane Society. Students can learn how dogs think and why they behave the way they do.
