SAN MARCOS — Contestants are being sought for the 2007 Miss San Marcos Pageant to be held Feb. 24 in the Hearth Theatre at the San Marcos Community Center.

The pageant is open to young women age 17, who are seniors in high school, through age 22 who have lived in San Marcos for at least six months.

The winner will serve as an ambassador for her community for the upcoming year. Along with the queen, princesses will be selected by the judging panel during the pageant. Prizes and gifts are awarded to the queen and her court courtesy of the local business community.

Garden of Lights at Quail Gardens

ENCINITAS — Quail Botanical Gardens will light up the holiday season during the month of December with its “Garden of Lights” celebration from 5 to 9 p.m. today through Dec. 23 and Dec. 26-30 at the gardens, 230 Quail Gardens Drive.

The annual event is an extravaganza of more than 90,000 sparkling lights, which illuminate the gardens. Festivities will include family-friendly activities, including horse-drawn-wagon rides, crafts for children, marshmallow roasting, visits with Santa, live music, hot mulled wine and refreshments.

YMCA plans wellness fair, membership special

    Yoga class to benefit Humane Society

    Seniors can get free Lifeline installation

    NORTH COUNTY — To help seniors living in the Palomar Pomerado Health district have peace of mind this holiday season, PPH is offering free Lifeline installation to new subscribers now through Jan. 31.

    Lifeline is an easy-to-use personal response service that ensures older adults living at home will receive quick assistance whenever it is needed. By pushing a lightweight waterproof button that can be worn around the neck or wrist, a subscriber has immediate access to a highly trained monitor who will assess the caller’s situation and efficiently link each subscriber to the care they need.

    Installation on Lifeline is free to new subscribers through Jan. 31. This is a savings of $75. The monthly service fee is $39, with no long-term contract.

    50-mile progressive hike planned

    ESCONDIDO — Work off those holiday excesses and start the New Year off right. Daley Ranch naturalist and marathoner Don Parnell will lead a 50-mile, progressive hike beginning Jan. 10 and ending Jan. 14. Each day’s hike will start at 8:30 a.m. at the La Honda Drive entrance and cover nearly every trail at Daley Ranch. Special certificates of completion will be awarded to each person who finishes all 50 miles.

    Ms. Senior San Diego entrants sought

    SAN DIEGO — Senior women are invited to compete for the title of Ms. Senior San Diego 2007 on Feb. 16 and 17 at the Balboa Park Club. The contest is sponsored by Ms. Senior American Inc. and San Diego Parks and Recreation Services, Senior Division.

    The winner and the top two runners-up will compete with other regional winners for the Ms. Senior California 2007 title. Individual state queens will then compete for the crown of Ms. Senior America 2007 later in the year in Las Vegas.
