NORTH COUNTY — A local eldercare company, along with area retailers and eldercare agencies, are bringing Santa to the lives of seniors who may have been overlooked in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. Be a Santa to a Senior Program is in its third year of providing gifts for needy seniors. The first year we reached 1000 needy seniors with gifts. The second year, 1264 needy seniors received gifts and interaction from volunteers in the community. The Vista office of Home Instead Senior Cares hopes to reach 2,000 needy seniors this year.
The program runs through Dec. 18, and prior to the holiday season, local senior organizations will identify needy seniors and give those names to Home Instead Senior Care. Christmas trees featuring the first names of seniors have gone up at Wal-Marts in Carlsbad, Oceanside, Vista and San Marcos. Shoppers can pick up an ornament, buy the items on the list and leave them at the store with the ornament attached
Here’s how the program, which runs from Nov. 20 through Dec. 18, works: Prior to the holiday season, the participating local senior organizations will identify financially needy and lonely seniors in the community and provide those names to Home Instead Senior Care for this community service program. Christmas trees, which will go up in the 5 Wal-Mart stores in Carlsbad, Oceanside, Vista, and San Marcos Nov. 20 and will feature ornaments with the first names of seniors and their respective gift requests. The site will be transformed into a 20,000-square-foot warehouse so that 1,000 low-income families can experience holiday shopping this season. Eligible North County families will fill their shopping carts with donated turkeys, staple foods, blankets, clothing, toys and more.
More than 1,500 volunteers and staff are working around the clock to sort 40 tons of food, 300 bicycles, 2,500 toys and more through Dec. 15. Those interested in donating, collecting, delivering or distributing items for holiday baskets can contact the Community Resource Center at (760) 753-1156, Ext. 1305. To learn more, visit
