ENCINITAS —- A motorcyclist sustained major injuries when he crashed during a high-speed pursuit down Interstate 5 early Sunday morning, authorities said.
The pursuit began just before 2:30 a.m. when Sgt. William Dreyer spotted the driver of a 2006 Honda motorcycle run through a four-way stop at Leucadia Boulevard and Hygeia Avenue at about 40 mph, Dreyer said in a statement.
Dreyer, in a marked patrol car, activated his lights and siren to stop the driver, who then sped up to 65 mph and continued east on Leucadia Boulevard toward I-5. The motorcyclist continued southbound down the freeway for several miles, reaching speeds up to 105 mph.
When the motorcyclist reached the Santa Fe Drive off-ramp, he turned his head to look back at the pursuing patrol car and drifted into another lane, where he crashed into the back end of a sedan, Dreyer said.
The impact ejected the motorcyclist from his vehicle and he sustained severe head trauma and other life-threatening injuries, the sergeant said.
The occupants of the sedan were transported to Scripps Encinitas Hospital as a precaution and the motorcyclist was transported by Mercy Air to Scripps La Jolla Hospital, authorities said.
Authorities also diverted freeway traffic at Santa Fe Drive for a time, sheriff’s Sgt. Chuck Yancey said.
