ENCINITAS —- A man was arrested Thursday on suspicion of attacking two deputies and injuring one along Encinitas Boulevard, Sheriff’s Department Sgt. J. Mata said.

It was unclear what provoked the man, Mata said.

About 1:30 p.m., Deputy Joe Mendoza spotted the man lying in the dirt next to a bicycle in the 700 block of Encinitas Boulevard and stopped to see if he was OK, Mata said.

The man, later identified as Bradley Buckley, was unresponsive and an ambulance was called, Mata said. As paramedics were about to take Buckley, he woke up and began fighting with Mendoza, he said.

Deputy Scott Hill responded to help Mendoza, which gave Mendoza time to use his Taser weapon on Buckley, Mata said. But Buckley allegedly began fighting with Hill, who was trying to handcuff him.

Mendoza used his Taser on Buckley again without effect, and Buckley then knocked it from his hands, Mata said. Hill then used his Taser on Buckley and subdued him with help from other deputies, Mata said.

Buckley was taken to a hospital and then booked into Vista jail on suspicion of assaulting a law enforcement officer, the sergeant said.

Mendoza was also taken to a hospital and was treated and released, Mata said. The deputy was expected to take some days off to heal from his injuries
