The final round of the 2007 Koastal Kaos Series as held on the weekend of April 7-8 at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, California. The seventh round of the San Diego-based series that has made tour stops at such breaks as Ocean Beach, Oceanside, La Jolla Shores and Encinitas, has now set the field for the highly-anticipated Koastal Kaos Invitational, set to commence at Pacific Beach Drive on May 5-6.
The Groms division (12 and under) got things started on Saturday at Moonlight Beach with Taylor Clark winning the final convincingly. Already considered one of the best young surfers in the United States of America, Clark also clinched the Grom division points’ title. Matt Lewis and Jacob Halstead also put in solid wave riding performance at Moonlight, finishing second and third, respectively. Trevor Thornton, Joey Filter and Kyle Timm rounded out the top five of the most entertaining, hardest fought division in the Koastal Kaos Series lineup.
Alexa Dilly, surfing in only her second Koastal Kaos event of the season, took the measure of the Womens classification at Moonlight Beach, posting two solid scores and outlasting the charging Danielle Dickerson to take the title. Lauren Nutter had her best finish to date and placed third as well as finishing overall for the year. Winnie Riley, with her fourth place finish, also moved up the overall Koastal Kaos Series points standings and finished second overall. And while BreAnne Custodio placed a somewhat quiet fifth at Moonlight, it was what she needed to clinch the Koastal Kaos Series Womens points’ title!
In the Boys division, the buzz was all about Cole Moody of Dana Point. And he showed everyone why he was star of the show at Moonlight, posting the two highest scores in the Boys final and taking an uncontested victory. Dale Timm put in yet another solid performance at Moonlight Beach, surfing to second place and locking up second overall in the Koastal Kaos Boys points race. Austin Ganz placed third, while Ian Garcia made the final in his first Koastal Kaos event and finished fourth.
David Suhadolnik won the Juniors class (15-17) at Moonlight Beach, and upon doing so, earned a spot in the approaching Koastal Kaos Series Invitational. Dale Timm finished a mere .5 of a point behind winner Suhadolnik, proving, yet again, why he is the Juniors champion for 2007. After a fine outing punctuated by excellent surfing, Austin Ganz was relegated to the third position after a count back with Timm. Hunter Lysaught finished fourth at Moonlight Beach with Gabe Garcia and Taylor Clark paddling in at fifth and sixth.
The Masters division at Moonlight Beach was, for all intents and purposes, the Rusty Phillipy show. He held station in his home water, surfing with authority in the form of numerous and other outstanding moves. It was Rusty’s first victory of the season. Ed Custodio, who surfed great all day, came up just short to Phillipy, having to settle for runner-up due to not having a solid backup score in the pocket of his boardshorts. Jason Shook came down for his first Koastal Kaos Series and surfed to an impressive third place finish. Todd Ayres, Tim Senneff, and Paul Pugliesi reveled in the fun surf and finished off the day in fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.
The Mens division at Moonlight Beach was heavily stacked with talent, with everyone in the field ready to have-at. Rick Takahashi started things off with a bang, nailing down a rock solid score of seven. Colin Wagschal answered back with a serious backside wave graced with a series of snaps and an air on the inside. Seeing this, Rick Takahashi came roaring back with another left and repossessed the lead. Colin Wagschal was having none of Takahashi’s one-upmanship and snagged the only barrel of the day and followed it up with a perfect roundhouse. Colin finished off the wave with a sick snap on the closeout. It was the wave — and the ride — of the weekend, Colin rewarded by the judges with a score on none and rewarded by the Koastal Kaos crew with the Mens overall season points victory. Congratulations to both Colin and Ken who will, no doubt, get back in the ring together at the fast approaching Koastal Kaos Invitational.
