SAN DIEGO – A blustery spring storm blew through the region Tuesday, delivering scattered rainfall, mountain snow flurries and stiff winds that sent trees toppling, authorities reported.

The unsettled front kicked up gusts of nearly 40 mph along the coast of San Diego County and sent even brisker blasts of cool air through eastern highland locales, according to the National Weather Service.

The winds sent trees crashing onto streets in a number of communities, including Encinitas – where a towering eucalyptus crashed onto three parked cars – Lakeside, Rancho Santa Fe and the Lomita area of eastern San Diego.

The tumbling timber blocked roads and tied up traffic but caused no reported injuries.

Over the day, the dark clouds dropped up to a few hundredths of an inch of precipitation in most parts of the county, though a few spots got around one-fifth of an inch of rain, the NWS reported.

Julian, Pine Valley and the Lake Henshaw area saw periods of snowfall. Hail was also reported from Julian to Mount Helix.

A daylong wind advisory for the coast and inland valley areas was set to expire this evening. In the East County mountains, the alert will run through 3 a.m. Wednesday, according to the weather service.

Over the next week, more typical springtime weather should settle over the region, bringing sunny skies and gradually warming temperatures, meteorologist Noel Isla said.
