Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 April, 2007 : – - Encinitas — In a few months, residents of Encinitas and passers-by will see a visible reminder on Coast Highway of two of the city’s most well-known pastimes: art and surfing. That reminder will arrive in the form of the bronze Cardiff surfing sculpture expected to be installed in June. It is an image of a male surfer who appears to be caught in the moment as he catches the tide.

“It’s a great combination of the surfing community and the arts community,” said Barbara Cobb, member of the Surfing Sculpture Committee. The group of residents is donating the $60,000 sculpture to the city. The sculpture, which was made by Matthew Antichevich, a resident of Hemet who surfs in Cardiff, will be located on the west side of Coast Highway and Chesterfield Drive in a 30-square-foot spot of city-owned land. She said the committee “sent a call out to artists” and selected Antichevich’s work from a variety of submissions. She said the selection was easy, because his work showed that he “understood the movements” of surfing, “When we saw it, it was hard for anyone to think of anyone else but him,” she said
