ENCINITAS —- Two artists from diverse genres, one of whom is a former Encinitas mayor, will exhibit their works at the Encinitas Civic Center Art Gallery in January.

Rene Wagemakers, originally from the Netherlands, is known for his realistic portraits in oils on canvas, according to a news release from the city. Many of his works are in private collections in Europe, as well as city halls, banks and other public buildings.

Maura (Wiegand) Harvey is a bilingual poet, author and mixed media artist who has lived in California since 1950, the news release states. She has taught Spanish for 35 years and has published a book of poems in Spanish and English. She often blends her poems with her paintings, which she began exhibiting in 2005.

Harvey’s art also features three-dimensional objects from her travels to such places as Mexico, Russia and Japan.

Harvey served on the Encinitas City Council from 1990 through 1994 and was appointed mayor in 1994. She also has a local weekly TV show, “North County Alive,” and has been a guest speaker at numerous public events.
