ENCINITAS – A man who authorities suspect broke into a gift and book store early Wednesday morning was shot with a Taser after he charged at a sheriff’s deputy.
The deputy had responded to a burglar alarm at Ducky Waddle’s Emporium on North Coast Highway 101 near Portal Street just before 7 a.m. when he saw the 34-year-old man outside the business, sheriff’s officials said.
The man claimed to be the store’s owner and he told the deputy he thought someone had broken into it.
As the deputy questioned him, the man took off running but was quickly cornered. He ran directly at the deputy, who fired the Taser at him, officials said.
After a brief struggle the man was taken into custody.
Deputies said they later found two guns in his car as well as stolen property from the store.
He was arrested for commercial burglary, being under the influence of a controlled substance, possession of firearms while under the influence as well as resisting arrest and other charges.
He was taken to a hospital with unspecified medical problems.
