ENCINITAS —- Two horses, a pony and a donkey escaped from their corral Saturday night, headed out onto Manchester Avenue in Encinitas and had to be rounded up by deputies, citizens and neighbors, said Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Amy Brown.

Unfortunately, one of the older horses appeared to have been hit by a vehicle and suffered a broken leg, she said.

The bizarre call came at 8:15 p.m. and initial reports were that the four animals were on Encinitas Boulevard, Brown said. Later, deputies learned that the animals were on Manchester Avenue and heading toward El Camino Real, she said.

Deputies were able to reach the animals’ owner, an equine veterinarian who was out of town and had someone watching his animals for him, she said.
