My cousin Jenny and I live closer together now than we ever have in our lives. She moved to Los Angeles a couple weeks ago and came down to Irvine on Saturday night so we could do a day trip to San Diego on Sunday. I took her to some of my favorite places; the Java Hut in Encinitas and the beach at Swamis, La Jolla Cove to see the seals, and Old Town San Diego for maragarita, chips, and salsa. We also played Phantom Planet’s California as we aproached Laguna Beach and made friends with our waiter Matthew who was from ‘back east’ in Massachusetts. Jenny and I at Coyote CafeBack east. Seems to me this infers that the speaker is from or at least has lived on the east coast, right? But no, people here say it all the time, and hardly anyone has actually been to the east coast! I don’t get it, we never say ‘back west’, makes no sense. Anyway, Jenny and I had our maragaritas, a root beer float, and were fully satisfied. She took the train home to LA the next morning.
