SAN DIEGO – Eighteen juveniles were detained during a curfew sweep in five North County coastal communities, a sheriff’s official said Saturday.

Detectives from the county sheriff’s Juvenile Unit conducted the sweep starting at 11 p.m. Friday night in Del Mar, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Encinitas, Leucadia and Solana Beach.

A county curfew ordinance affects juveniles 16 and younger, and is set at 10 p.m. during the Spring, said Lt. Phil Brust of the county Sheriff’s Department.

Along with the 18 detained, detectives also arrested a 20-year-old on suspicion of driving under the influence, said Sgt. Greg Barnett of the Encinitas patrol station.

One of the juveniles, he said, had been hurt during a fight earlier in the evening and was released to his mother, who took him to an emergency room.

“Children out after curfew are statistically more likely to be victims of crime,” Barnett said.

Barnett did not say if the remainder were taken into custody or released to their parents.
