NORTH COUNTY —- A road closure caused by phone poles knocked down in Sunday’s heavy wind and a severe injury traffic crash were keeping some commuters alert this morning in north San Diego County.

AT&T crews were still working today to reset about 16 phone poles knocked down Sunday during heavy Santa Ana wind conditions on Valley Center Road, between Vesper and Mac Tan roads.

The usually busy road in Valley Center remained closed there this morning for that work.

At 5:19 this morning a white Thunderbird and a Civic collided on eastbound Highway 76 at South Mission Road in Bonsall, blocking two lanes for a time, according to the California Highway Patrol . Both drivers were taken to an area hospital.

There was the usual slowing on southbound Interstate 5 from Carlsbad through Encinitas on the coast, as well as on inland southbound Interstate 15 through Escondido as far as Lake Hodges.

Highway 78 was moving well in both directions.
