SAN DIEGO – Another day of cool weather and overcast skies kept San Diego beaches fairly uncrowded today, giving law enforcement some respite.

“I hear there’s even parking down at the beach, which is unusual for a holiday,” said Officer Jeff Hutchins with the Coronado Police Department. “I haven’t got a clue why, but I don’t want to jinx it. It’s been a nice, easy day.”

Lifeguards on duty were also spared any emergencies by Sunday afternoon, attributed partially to the small surf and 61-degree weather, a dispatcher said.

State troopers reported no traffic fatalities on San Diego area roads, and by this morning reported one fewer drinking and driving arrest than last year’s Memorial Day weekend.

Traffic congestion was isolated mainly to Interstate 5 from Leucadia Boulevard to Manchester Avenue.

“The speeds are in the teens to 20s. Everything else is up to full speed,” said Officer Rob Sanchez, who attributed a low turnout to cool weather.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t get a lot of help from mother nature this year. We’ll see how things turn out. Hopefully, we’ll get some sun tomorrow,” he said.

Tomorrow’s forecast calls for patchy fog with a high of 71 degrees and low of 58 degrees. The water at Mission Beach was 66 degrees.
