Escondido Public Library’s First Tuesday film series will feature the movie “Tortilla Soup.” In the 2001 film, an old-fashioned Mexican-American father cooks lavish dinners for his three single adult daughters who do not conform to his ideas of what a proper Latina should be. The event will honor two distinguished alumni – Jack Burke, a staff member of U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter’s Washington, D.C., office, and Salvador Garcia, interim vice chairman for Juaneño Band of Mission Indians who works with Viejas tribal government and other tribal communities. Coca-Cola mini-grant proposal requests are being accepted. Nonprofit youth service and youth-driven organizations can apply for funding to benefit Oceanside youth. Two grant opportunities are available: the Parks and Recreation Commission’s “Opportunities for Youth,” which is designated for any youth-service provider with a nonprofit status based out of Oceanside, and the Youth Commission’s “For Youth by Youth,” which is exclusively for youth programs initiated and carried out by young people. Funds will be awarded through a competitive request for proposal process and will be distributed in September. Applications are available at 300 N. The First Presbyterian Church is having a cell phone drive for the Women’s Resource Center. Donated cell phones will be sold to a recycler, and the proceeds will benefit the center’s programs for threatened women and children in North County. Volunteer musicians are needed when Patio Playhouse Community Theatre presents “The King and I” this summer at Kit Carson Park in Escondido. People who play flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, percussion, violin, viola, cello, bass and harp are needed.
