CARMEL VALLEY —- Cailene Kilcoyne, 17, a student at Torrey Pines High School, recently took third place in the final concert round of Project CenterStage: A Teen Musical Competition, produced by J*Company Youth Theatre, a program of the San Diego Center for Jewish Culture at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center, Jacobs Family Campus.
Cailene received a $250 scholarship. April Kilbourne, 15, from Rancho Bernardo High School, took first place and received a $1,000 scholarship; and Dorothy Guthrie, 17, from Coronado High School, received a $500 award. Seven North County teens took part in the finals, held at the David & Dorthia Garfield Theatre in La Jolla.
About 60 hopefuls competed during three preliminary auditions of the contest and a total of 15 made it to the final rounds. Other finalists included: Avery Henderson, 16, of Oceanside; Kendahl Newman, 15, of Rancho Santa Fe; Marissa Novak, 14, of Encinitas; Katie Heinemann, 16, of Rancho Bernardo; and Lauren Thompson, 17, of Poway.
Singing songs of their choice accompanied by a band, finalists performed musical theater songs before a panel of judges and were scored based on vocal quality, stage presence and professionalism.
RBV Poetry Slam to be held
VISTA —- Creative writing students at Rancho Buena Vista High School will hold their annual Poetry Slam at 12:45 p.m. Feb. 14 in the Performing Arts Center of the campus, 1601 Longhorn Drive.
The event, in the style of HBO’s now-defunct “Def Poetry Jam,” will feature performances of original poetry by RBV students, as well as local poets including published poet and teacher John Rubio and La Paloma Slam winner Corey Taft.
A second show will be presented at 7 p.m. Feb. 15. The event is open to the community and admission is free. The evening show will feature emcee Bob Nanninga, columnist for the Coast News and celebrated Full Moon Poet.
The RBV Poetry Slam has has grown each year since its inception five years ago. It provides an opportunity for brave teen poets at their creative best to stand and deliver a spoken word performance for an enthusiastically loud crowd of their peers.
CHS concert planned
CARLSBAD —- The Carlsbad High School band program will present Presidio Brass in concert with the Carlsbad High School Wind Symphony, with a special guest appearance by the Calavera Hills Middle School band at 7 p.m. at the Calavera Hills Middle School Auditorium, 4104 Tamarack Ave.
Tickets cost $15, and children are free with an adult admission. Proceeds will benefit the Carlsbad High and Calavera Hills Middle School band programs.
The Presidio Brass has performed on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” in performances with ensembles of the Juilliard School and in appearances with artists like Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones and Marvin Hamlisch. Carlsbad students will be given a chance to experience playing alongside professional musicians at the upcoming concert.

Art contest ongoing
NORTH COUNTY —- The Active Network is sponsoring the Active Art Competition for San Diego County students from kindergarten through fifth grade. Entrants are being asked to create drawings that show what the term “active” means to them.
The grand prize winner will have his or her drawing seen by thousands of people, and receive $1,000 in supplies for their classroom and a bicycle. Artwork will be divided into two categories: kindergarten through second grade and third through fifth grade. Judging criteria will be artistic merit, creativity and a supporting statement about the piece students have submitted.

‘Annie, Jr.’ to be performed
CARLSBAD —- The Aviara Oaks Middle School Drama Department will present “Annie, Jr.” March 1 through 3 at the Carlsbad Cultural Arts Center, 3557 Lancer Way.
Three performances will showcase the talents of the school’s drama department under the direction of drama teacher Andrea Schuck-Emert. The adapted version of the 1977 Broadway musical, based on the “Little Orphan Annie” comic strip about a young orphan girl’s adventure in finding a family, will be presented on at 7 p.m. March 1 and 2 and at 2 p.m. March 3. High Tea volunteers sought
CARLSBAD —- Classic Youth Theatre Inc. is looking for volunteers to help with its new High Tea and Study Hall program, to be held during the group’s rehearsals at Magee Park.
The group has decided to supplement its program by offering youngsters a healthy late afternoon snack during rehearsal time. High Tea will give them a quiet space to work and adults who will supervise and help them with their homework. Anyone interested in volunteering to help students with their studies and provide healthy snacks may contact Program Coordinator Loralie McGill at (760) 730-9447.

Youth art show continues
ENCINITAS —- An exhibit of artwork by kindergarten through eighth-grade students from Rancho Encinitas Acade is being featured throughout February at the Off Track Gallery, 687 S. Coast Highway.
A reception for the show, titled “Color Studies on Paper,” will be held from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Feb. 2 at the gallery.
The Rancho Encinitas Academy League will host the reception and provide refreshments.
Academy art teacher Debbie Schaefer encouraged students to explore shapes and lines, and repeat patterns and color combinations including warm and cool colors to create their designs.
Some of the designs will be chosen for publication in the school’s annual calendar.

Film workshops for girls offered
ESCONDIDO —- Middle and high school girls are invited to participate in Divas Direct Film Workshops hosted by the Escondido Arts Partnership and the San Diego Women film Foundation. No film experience is necessary.
The workshops, to be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 17 and 24, will educate girls on the technical and creative skills of film making. Through the mentorship of local women filmmakers, participants will learn the technical skills of producing, filming and editing.

‘Spotlight on the Arts’ workshop offered
SAN MARCOS —- Premiere Productions will present “Spotlight on the Arts,” a youth theater workshop, from 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays, March 31 through May 5 at the San Marcos Community Center, 3 Civic Center Drive.
Youngsters age 7 to 17 are welcome to take part. The workshop will introduce participants to the joys of the theater, and a showcase will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. May 6. Cost is $100 per student. Youth symphony to perform
The San Diego Youth Symphony & Conservatory will hold its Spring Recital at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 17 at the Borrego Springs Performing Arts Center, 590 Palm Canyon Drive, Borrego Springs.
A number of the 450 members of the conservancy are North County residents. Founded in 1945 by Leo Scheer under the sponsorship of the San Diego Park and Recreation Department, the San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory gives talented student and pre-professional musicians an opportunity to study and perform classical repertoire at a highly advanced level.
The sixth-oldest continuously operating youth orchestra in the United States, the program has grown during the tenure of Artistic Director Jeff Edmons from one orchestra to three full symphony orchestras and a chamber orchestra at the advanced level; and four large ensembles for students at the intermediate and introductory levels. The organization also supports a string quartet, woodwind quartet, flute choir, brass choir, two French horn ensembles, advanced ppercussion ensemble and brass quintet.Ý
