Our Madonna Can Surf! Can Yours?
Well there is a singing Madonna, Madonna art and then there is the surfing Madonna of Encinitas.
Our Madonna wasn’t created by dancing and singing
(although Encinitas locals did a bit of that).
Our Madonna wasn’t created at the end of paintbrush.
She was created by, according to the city of Encinitas, an act of… vandalism. Mark Patterson and a colleague (Da Vinci? Jesus?) installed the mosaic secretly – under the train tracks at Encinitas Boulevard – on the afternoon of… wait, wait… Good Friday, April 22, 2011.
The Virgin of Guadelupe mosaic is on a white surfboard, hands in prayer with her green cloak waving in the wind.
“Save the Ocean” is etched on her as a fiercely as a biker tattoo.
