About 920 North County Homes Without Power Saturday

High winds played a role in several power outages throughout the county Saturday, a utility spokeswoman said. The largest outage is affecting 223 homes and businesses in a community between Escondido and Poway was reported today, according to San Diego Gas & Electric.

The outage was first reported at 11:34 a.m. in Highland Valley, according to SDG&E’s Web site. What caused the outage is not clear, but power could be restored by 4:30 p.m. tThe power is also out for 45 customers, in West Jamul, Jamacha and Indian Springs, could be restored by 6 p.m., according to SDG&E. The wind blew down wires, causing several outages, Carrillo said. Small power outages, affecting 10 customers or less, are reported in Japatul Valley, Otay Mesa, San Ysidro and southeast Rancho Santa Fe. SDG&E crews “are diligently working to restore power,” said Claudia Carrillo, spokeswoman. The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for San Diego County until 2 p.m. Sunday. Wind gusts between 40 and 50 mph were reported in the eastern part of the county earlier today, causing the California Highway Patrol to close Interstate 8 to large vehicles. SDG&E was able to turn the power back on for 2,692 homes and businesses in Encinitas, Cardiff-by-the-Sea and Olivenhain by 10:30 a.m. Saturday after an outage that lasted 1 1/2 hours. What caused the outage is still unknown.
