Cardiff has the Cardiff Kook, Encinitas has the Surfing Madonna and Leucadia has the Shark
The Cardiff Kook
It must be the ultimate dawn patrol every time the Kook is accessorized. From emerging from and escaping the jaws of a gigantic paper-mache shark to wearing a wedding dress in honor of the Royal Wedding, the Cardiff Kook has, in a very short period of time, taken on a life of its own. Even the Wall Street Journal wrote an article about the Kook.
He has become world-recognized, photographed, remarked upon, studied, laughed at and admired(?)
The Surfing Madonna
Now Encinitas has its own iconic and controversial art piece: the Surfing Madonna. She was born under the railroad bridge on Encinitas Boulevard between Vulcan Ave. and Highway 101, and immediately achieved diva status. After all, her artist crafted a beautiful, colorful and respectful piece of art that was quickly photographed, talked about, studied, admired and some say… adored. The City of Encinitas, however, (after much controversy and public discussion), ordered her removed from her public space under the bridge and now she (and her artist) are researching an alternate — and hopefully permanent — place for her presence to be seen and admired for all posterity.
Hail Mary full of grace, the public is with thee.
The Leucadia Shark
Not to be outdone, and, if only for a day, Beacon’s Beach in Leucadia had the “Shark.”
Enterprising individuals create a paper mache welcoming mat for visitors.
Of course when you combine the Cardiff Kook with the Leucadia Shark you get something to pray for…
