The 12-member California Coastal Commission is an independent state agency created by voter initiative in 1972 and made permanent by the Legislature in 1976.
In partnership with coastal cities and counties, the Coastal Commission regulates land and water use in the coastal zone. Development activities, land-use changes or changes to public access to coastal waters, generally require a permit from the commission or the local government.
The commission meets monthly around the state.
